Spirit 3 – Brought to Life in Stainless Steel
Spirit 3 is the third sculpture in Hugh Chapman’s ongoing Spirit series. This series of works is of great personal significance to the artist and is among the most fulfilling works of his career.
The creation of the original proved extremely demanding for Chapman—mentally, emotionally, and physically. Its fragile and unstable nature presented Chapman with significant challenges: As he worked the form, it bent and warped, his hands having to predict the final form when it relaxed after working. The sculpture was permanently at risk of structural failure throughout the exhaustive creation process. With perseverance he was able to achieve the uncompromising standard of finish which his sculptures demand.
The Spirit series is part of a larger, long-term project that Chapman will continue to pursue until the moment when he once again meets with the same beautiful and transcending moment that once inspired the creation of these works.
Spirit 3 is currently in a maquette form for a much larger work of about 3.6meters
